Getting
to the Bay of Islands:
Our base is located at the village of Opua, some three
and a half hours drive north of Auckland city and four from the
international airport. Take State Highway 1 north to Kawakawa, then
SH 10 and follow signs to Opua. Paihia, the main tourist town for
the area, is 6km ($15 taxi) north of Opua.
Secured car parking is available from Opua Marina
($10 per day, booking not required). On street parking is free.
Air
New Zealand has flights between Auckland and
Kerikeri. A shuttle service meets each flight and makes the half
hour journey to Opua. Cost: $75 per trip (up to six passengers)
by Paihia Taxi's or Kerikeri Shuttles. Drivers will stop at the
Paihia supermarket for provisioning if requested.
Daily bus services between Auckland and Opua (Paihia)
are operated by Intercity.
(Around $50 per person, each way)
Nationwide
is currently the only rental car company allowing
one way hire with a drop off at Opua. Ask about their one day -
one way rentals ($220, plus fuel).
Accommodation:
Paihia has a wide range of accommodation. Opua has small motels

Shopping
and provisioning:
Opua General Store has a selection of basic provisioning (including
bread baked daily). Paihia (7 min drive, $15 taxi) has all services

information:
NZ
MetService website has local forecasts (the Bay of Islands is
in sea area Brett), weather maps, and satellite images.
Tides:
The tidal range in the Bay of Islands is never more than
2m and tidal streams are negligible, but try this link for a daily
tidal graph (select port of Russell), or this for official
tide tables (select data for Marsden Point).
